Edit Translations Manually

You can view the source and the translated text in the Translation dashboard, and add or edit the translated text manually.

Prerequisites

  • In order to translate a story, make sure that the translation feature is enabled in the tenant.
  • You must be assigned either a Translator role, or a custom role with Create permission for Translation, to add translated text for a story.

Context

Procedure

  1. From the side navigation, choose Translation.
  2. Select the story you want to translate manually and select (Edit Translations).
The list of source text appears.
  3. Choose the Target Language and start adding the translated text in the empty field.
    Tip
You can select (Copy from source) to copy the source text.
    Note
If you have enabled the Hide HTML Tags in Translation Page toggle, consider the following:
    • Select (Copy from source) to copy the formatted source text to the target field. Start editing the target field to retain formatting of the source text.

    • If you manually type in the target field, formatting of the first word in the source text is retained.

    • If you manually copy and paste the source text to the target field, the formatting of the source text is not retained.

    • If you want to retain formatting of the source field to the new text you copied from an external site, select (Copy from source) to pre-fill the target field. Replace the pre-filled target field with the text from an external site.

    Note
When you edit translations manually with the Hide HTML Tags in Translation Page toggle enabled, it might be helpful for you to go through typical use cases and examples.
    Example
When the source text has no formatting.
    • The text you type in the target field will be plain text.

    • If you select (Copy from source) in the translation dashboard to copy the source text into the target text field, the target text will be plain text.

    • If you manually copy from the source to the target text field, the text will be plain text.

    • The text you copy from any external source or editor will not retain formatting and will be plain text.

    • If you perform a combination of actions such as copying from an external source or editor or selecting (Copy from source), typing, and copying and pasting manually, the target field text will be plain text.

    Example
When the source text has simple formatting.

This example has bold, italic, and text color, and the entire sentence has the same formatting.
    • • The formatting of the first character of the sentence in the source text will be applied to the text you begin to type in the target text field.

    • If you select (Copy from source) in the translation dashboard, the formatting of the source text will be carried over into the target text field. If you continue editing the text, it will take the formatting of the last character that appears in the target text field.

    • If you manually copy and paste from the source or any external source or editor to the target text field, the text will not retain formatting and will be rendered as plain text.

    • When you select (Copy from source) and copy the source text, the target text field will retain its formatting. If you then perform actions such as copying from an external source or editor, typing, or copying and pasting manually, it will take the formatting of the last character that is present in the target text field.

    • When you copy text from an external source or editor, the target text field will not retain formatting. If you then perform actions such as typing or copying and pasting manually, the text will be plain text.

    Example
When the source text has complex formatting.

This example has different formatting for different texts.
    • The formatting of the first character of the sentence in the source text will be applied to the text you begin to type in the target text field.

    • If you select (Copy from source) in the translation dashboard, the formatting of the source text will be carried over into the target text field.

    • If you manually copy and paste from the source to the target text field, the text will not retain formatting and will be rendered as plain text.

    • If you manually copy and paste from any external source or editor to the target text field, the text will not retain formatting and will be rendered as plain text.

    Note
    • You can select (Filter) to filter the source text based on the following criteria: Translated, Not Translated, HTML, or Text.
  4. Select Save.
A message Translation updated successfully appears, and the user who had marked the story, model, or dimension for translation is notified.
