Work with SAP BW Dynamic Filters

You can use SAP BW's BEx query dynamic filters for charts and tables in your story.

When you add a BW dynamic filter to your story, it affects both charts and tables.

You can add or update a dynamic filter in two ways: from a chart or table variable dialog or from the story variable dialog.

Note
Variables may accept a single value, multiple single values, or ranges. However, range or variable values set with mixed operators are currently not supported. In this case, the dynamic filter is not displayed.

Modify Filters Using the Chart or Table Variable Dialog

  1. With your story open, in the Data area in the toolbar, select (Edit Prompts), and choose the data source that has the prompts you want to edit.
  2. Select (Edit Table Prompts) under the table or chart name, and then select Set Chart Variables or Set Table Variables.
  3. In the Set Variables dialog, scroll to the bottom for the dynamic filter field.
  4. Select the member area, and then select a value from the members.

Variables chosen from the chart or table variable dialog will overwrite the chart or table filter whether or not you modify the chart or table. Also, the chart or table filter values will be projected back to the variables when the chart or table variable dialog is opened, if you choose to use chart or table level variables.

Note

You can change the filter for either a chart or a table, but once you do that, the object that you updated will no longer be affected by changes to the “global” dynamic filter.

Modify Filters Using the Story Variable Dialog

  1. With your story open, in the Data area in the toolbar, select (Edit Prompts), and choose the data source with the prompts you want to edit.
  2. In the Set Variables dialog, scroll to the bottom for the dynamic filter field.
  3. Select the member area, and then select a value from the members.

If you don't modify the filter, and you also don't switch to chart or table level variables, the variables chosen from the story level will update the previously generated dynamic filter.

Save Query Variants

In the Set Variables dialog, the Apply Variant field provides you with a choice:
  • Select an existing variant from the list.

  • Overwrite Variant with Current Settings: replaces the existing variant.

  • Save Current Settings as Variant: lets you create a new personal or global variant.

  • Manage Variants: lets you edit variants (name, type, technical name) or delete them.
