Creating a Linked Analysis

Create a linked analysis to drill through hierarchical data or create filters that simultaneously update multiple charts in your story. You can also create a linked analysis from a table measure to simultaneously update multiple charts in your story.

Context

With linked analysis, when you create filters or drill through hierarchical data in one chart, the same filters are applied to other charts that you include in the analysis. For a filter to update other charts, the charts in the analysis must be based on the same model, or the source models must contain linked dimensions.
Note
Spatial filters created with a geo map can be applied to the story or group through linked analysis.

Linked analysis can also be used to link a table measure or account name to the same measure in one or more charts. When the table is linked to the chart, selecting a table cell won't change what the chart displays, but selecting a column header will.

Procedure

  1. Select an object (chart, geo map, or table) in your story.
Your selection will be the driver for the linked analysis.
  2. From the (More Actions) menu select (Linked Analysis).
  3. Select an interaction option:
    Option Description
Only this Widget (default option): Filtering and drilling through hierarchical data on this object will only update this object.
    All widgets in the Story
Filtering and drilling through hierarchical data on this object will update all the objects in the story based on the same model or linked dimensions to this object's model.
    • Use this table to control measures: When your object is a table, this option lets you use that table to control which measures appear in other objects in the page or story. A new measure input control is automatically created to be used as a chart measure.

    All widgets on this Page
Filtering and drilling through hierarchical data on this object will update all the objects in the page based on the same model or linked dimensions to this object's model.
    • Filter on datapoint selection: filters other charts on a selected datapoint.
    • Use this table to control measures: When your object is a table, this option lets you use that table to control which measures appear in other objects in the page or story. A new measure input control is automatically created to be used as a chart measure.

    Only selected widgets
Filtering and drilling through hierarchical data on this chart will update only specific widgets.
    • Automatically connect newly created widgets: applies linked analysis from the driver to any new widgets using the same model or linked models.
    • Filter on datapoint selection: filters other charts on a selected datapoint.
    • Use this table to control measures: When your object is a table, this option lets you use that table to control which measures appear in other objects in the page or story. A new measure input control is automatically created to be used as a chart measure.

    Note
When enabling linked analysis on a chart set with a geo map, you can set a filter based on a data point in the bubble layer or a selected shape in the choropleth layer. A Histogram, Waterfall, or a Time Series chart can receive links from other charts, but it cannot send them.
  4. Select Apply.

Results

Your linked analysis is created.

Restriction

In the classic design experience, both a story-level linked analysis filter and a widget-level filter are created. Removing the linked analysis filter does not automatically remove the widget-level filter: you must manually delete the filter.

In the optimized design experience, only the story-level linked analysis filter is created.

Filtering and drilling through hierarchical data on this object will simultaneously update other objects depending on the interaction option you selected.

Note
  • If the charts in your linked analysis are based on models with linked dimensions, the ID of the linked dimensions must match. Otherwise, filtering in one chart will not update the linked charts.

  • If the charts in your linked analysis are based on models with linked dimensions, and you drill through the data in one chart, filters are applied on all linked charts, but the level of the data displayed is not changed.

  • Linked analysis filters that apply to All widgets in the Story will replace story filters on the same dimension.

  • When you delete a chart filter using the filter token, the chart interaction is shared by the linked analysis; therefore, story filters applied on the same dimension will also be deleted.
