Configure Filter Lines (Optimized Story Experience)

As a story developer, you can create a filter line, which can be composed of multiple dimension member filters, either for an individual widget or a group of widgets in your story.

Context

Filter lines let you filter on data-bound widgets. There’re two modes in filter lines:

  • Individual Widget Filter, which can be applied to an individual widget in the story. The widget can be a chart, table or R visualization.

The widget's local filters are also displayed. You cannot select the dimension members on it in edit time.

  • Group Filter, which can be applied to multiple widgets on the same page in the story. Supported widgets are charts and tables.

You can preselect the members on it in edit time.

Note

Currently, filter lines aren't available to story designers.

When a filter line's applied to the widgets, it displays the selected members. Otherwise, it appears empty.

If you choose to define filter line for a group of widgets, filter line filters and each widget's local filters can exist at the same time. The final filtering result of a widget is the joint data range of the corresponding filter line and local filter. Your filter line won't be affected by any change on the local filter.

Procedure

  1. From the Insert area of the toolbar, select Start of the navigation path Next navigation step  Filters/Controls Next navigation step Filter LineEnd of the navigation path to add a filter line to the page or popup.
  2. Open its Builder panel.
  3. Select a filter line mode.
    • If you select Individual Widget Filter, then:
      1. Select a widget to be filtered.

If you select an R visualization widget, additionally you need to specify the Input Data as the data source for dimensions in the filters.

      2. (Optional) Select + Add Dimension to define one or more dimension member filters.

If no dimensions are added, the local filters on the widgets are the default filters.

      Note

Changing the widget resets the dimension selection.

    • If you select Group Filter, then:
      1. Select a data source for the filter line, for example, an SAP Analytics Cloud model.
      2. (Optional) Select Add Dimension to define one or more dimension member filters.
      3. You can configure the default filters by Add Filters to select dimension members.

If you've specified dimensions in the previous step, you can only select the members from them. If no dimensions are specified, all dimensions and members from the data source are available.

      4. Choose the widgets you want to apply the filters to.

By default they are all the widgets bound to the selected data source and on the same page. You can select specific widgets to be filtered on.

Next Steps

Save and view the story. When you select (Set Filter), all the dimensions for filtering are displayed in the dropdown. After you've selected the dimension members, the filters are applied to the corresponding widgets, and the selections are displayed next to . You can remove or modify the filters afterwards.
