Creating a Geo Map

Like other chart types, you can add a geo map to a story canvas.

Prerequisites

You geo-enrich data in the Modeler. For more information see Creating a Model with Coordinate or Area Data for Geospatial Analysis.

Procedure

  1. From the Insert menu above the story canvas select Geo Map.

    A geo map widget is added to the canvas and the (Builder) opens under Designer on the right.

  2. From the Basemap list, select a visual style for the map hosted by Esri ArcGIS.

    For example, the Streets basemap can help you clearly visualize city neighborhoods, while the Light Gray basemap provides a simple, uncluttered look.

  3. Select (Add Layer) to add a layer to the map.
    Six layer types are available:

    Once you add a model to your geo map, it serves as the default model for any subsequent layers you create. You can always change the data source for any given Bubble, Choropleth, Heat Map, or Flow layer by selecting the corresponding (edit) icon under Data Source. If you choose the No Model option as your data source for a given layer, no data points will display for that layer. You cannot add a model based on blended data to a geo map.
  4. Select the (Hide Layer) icon next to a layer to toggle the layer visibility in the geo map.
  5. The geo map legend provides information for each layer, excluding the Feature layer. To specify which dimensions and measures are available for a layer in the legend, select Start of the navigation path Next navigation step Maintain legendEnd of the navigation path. You can set each entry to either Show or Hide. To remove a layer from both the legend and map, select Start of the navigation path Next navigation step Remove LayerEnd of the navigation path.
    In the map legend you can use the icon next to each layer to toggle the layer visibility. This is particularly useful for toggling between the displayed data during presentations.
    Note
    There are two style themes for map legends, map controls, and tooltip charts. To change the style themes, under Designer select (Styling). Under Map Controls you can select either the Light or Dark theme. You can also adjust the Opacity control slider as required.
  6. If necessary, filter the map data.
    • Select (polygon filter tool) on the left menu of the geo map, and choose either the circle or square filter tools. Then, draw a shape on the map around the data points that interest you.

      Select and drag points to change the filter shape. A toolbar of filter option will display near the filter shape. Choose to include all the data points within the filter shape. Choose to exclude all data points within the filter shape. Select (cancel) to remove the filter. Use the Opacity slider in (Builder) to reduce the opacity of shape.

    • Map filter: Find data points within or beyond a certain distance of a point of interest or another location dimension. Select the + icon for Add Filter in the geo map builder. In the Create Map Filter dialog, select Distance from Filter type. Select a geographical hierarchy for Show and either Within or Not Within from the Operator list. Type a distance and select a unit of measure. Finally, specify a point of interest or another location dimension as the Reference Location.

      Note
      To create a slider control filter based on distance from your Reference Location, select Start of the navigation pathAdd as an input control slider to page Next navigation step OKEnd of the navigation path. An input control slider appears next to the geo map. Select the control to move the slider between the minimum and maximum distance from your reference location.
    • Map filter: Display data points that intersect or not intersect with a point of interest or another location dimension. Select the + icon for Add Filter in the geo map builder. In the Create Map Filter dialog, select Intersection from Filter type. Select location dimensions for Show and either Intersecting or Not Intersecting from the Operator list. Finally, specify a point of interest or a location dimension as the Reference Location.
      Note
      You can use location references from live HANA systems to create map filters, however both references need to be on the same system.
    • Story filters: Any filters that you apply to the page or story will also filter data in the geo map.
    • Dimension filter: You may want to apply non-geographical filters to the layers of a geo map, for example, to view data for a specific product or time period.

      In the geo map builder, select next to the layer that you want to filter, and then select Add Filters to choose the dimension that you want to filter. For more information on working with filters, see Applying a Chart Filter.

      If the layer is based on a model that contains a version dimension, this dimension is filtered to the actuals data by default.

  7. Use the (Zoom In) or (Zoom Out) controls at the left side of the map to adjust the pan and zoom. You can also use the (Zoom to Data) or (Return to Last Saved ) controls to reset the display state.
  8. To manage thresholds in the geo map, select the icon to the right of the measure in the Builder.
    Select Start of the navigation pathShow Threshold Next navigation step NoneEnd of the navigation path to remove all thresholds. Go to Start of the navigation pathShow Threshold Next navigation step ModelEnd of the navigation path or Start of the navigation pathShow Threshold Next navigation step StoryEnd of the navigation path to specify which type of threshold you want to display. Select Edit Ranges or View all Thresholds to modify the thresholds.
  9. Under Properties specify how you want the geo map to display when opened. Pick one of the following options:
    • Open in last saved view : displays the zoom level and data points shown when you saved the geo map. This is the default setting.
    • Optimized to fit data points: displays a zoom level and display optimization that fits all the available data points.
